Day 46

Dec. 21, 2017
Only slept for two hours(accumulated) last night.

So last night was bad. The rain kept me up all night and the cold was relentless. It was so bad I actually had a dream I caught pneumonia. When I woke up, I was shaking uncontrollably. I grabbed my phone and booked an Airbnb for the next couple of nights. In the morning the sun did actually come out for a couple of hours, so I tried to do a little bit of work but it was no use. I was too exhausted and weak. So I packed my things and headed for the rental.

While on my way, I called the owner for the address as the entire time I only had the street name to go off of. She told me which one it was and that her roommate would let me in. Well, no one was home, so I called her back to let her know. She asked me to knock on her roommates window, so I did. Nothing. She told me to try the garage door, but the inner door was locked. The best part was her reaction when I told her no car was in the garage. Apparently, she didn’t know her roommate had left the home and borrowed her car in the process. So after knocking and ringing for a while, the host asked me to crawl through one of the bedroom windows to unlock the door from the inside. Oh yeah, this seems legit. Nothing
fishy at all about this. Once inside she guided me to the roommates’ room in case she was just severely passed out or maybe something was wrong. I have always wanted to add breaking and entering onto my resume. Luckily no one was there and I had not just bombarded some unsuspecting person in their own bed. The owner was furious. But, I was in, and I could now open the door and bring my things in and get them dried off. I called her once more to see when her roommate was coming home. I had not eaten all day and wanted to grab some food, but didn’t want to crawl through the window again when I returned. Leaving it unlocked was not an option as anyone can just walk up to the home from the street.

So I waited for about an hour and a half for her roommate to arrive. She told me that the internet had gone out so she ran into town to go and call her family from a pay phone. She is from Argentina so keeping in touch with her family is a high priority.  I was very curious about this need to steal a car to go call your family spiel, but eating was the only thing on my mind, so I asked her if she would be sticking around and could let me in after I went and got something to eat.

Once I got back her roommate and I got to talking and it is discovered that she is not her roommate at all, but another Airbnb guest herself. This was getting weirder by the minute. The host was actually in New York with her family and is in the process of selling the home, so the house had absolutely no furniture outside of the two bedrooms. Also, the other guest has been feeding her cats and cleaning the home in exchange for a lower rate. They set something up outside of the AirBnB parameters, but something else just
doesn’t feel right about this whole thing.

Later on that night her Russian boyfriend comes over, and I find out that they are going to be leaving for the weekend. Good for me, not so much for the cats. Well, guess who is now in charge of feeding them? Just add that to the list of unusual circumstances surrounding this trip. Luckily, I convinced the woman to give me the key before she left, because there is only one and she was going to take it to the other side of the island with her. I had to explain that when I leave to go work on my home, I will have to leave the house unlocked so I can get back in and her stuff will be unguarded in an unlocked house all day. That did the trick and I can now rest a little easier knowing at least I have access to a warm bed and a hot shower for the night.
