THE BACKSTORY

About a year ago my wife and I decided it was time to buy a home. We started asking around to several real estate agents. The agents showed us dozens of homes, both large and small. Most of the homes were very, very old. This seems to be the case for the specific area of Pennsylvania where we currently reside. Neither she nor I saw anything that really stood out for us. After a while, we started thinking, “what if we just buy the land and build our own home?” We were really into the whole tiny home scene at the time and we both knew this was the direction we wanted to go. So, I set off to find us the perfect piece of land. But, little did I know, that after two months of searching I would come up empty-handed.  Well, one spring day in April I made the suggestion that, neither one of us like where we are currently living, and are only doing so because of work. I asked, “If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?”, and she responded with “Hawaii”, and a slight chuckle. The next day I searched for properties in Hawaii and found them to be very similar to the pieces of land that we were just looking at nearby. I called several agents, and after being hung up on, put aside, told I was crazy, and just completely ignored, I finally got in touch with a genuinely great person. She was even willing to go and take current pictures of any land we so desired. After some searching, we finally found the perfect lot and made an offer. About two weeks after we got a call that they have accepted and it was off to the races.

Fast forward six months later and that is where the story picks up. I have just flown out to Hilo, Hi. to see our land for the first time and to get started on building the home. My wife was originally scheduled to come with me and help, but we found out three months prior that she was pregnant and would not be able to join me. So, it was just me, and two suitcases full of tools and clothes. I just landed in Hilo, grabbed my rental car and headed to the Airbnb. So sit back, relax, grab some popcorn, and enjoy a rollercoaster of emotions as we build our dream home together.

A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find that after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us.                                  – John Steinbeck
